Project overview

The problem
The client operated an existing, non-standard Android build pipeline for generating APKs, with no usage analytics in place.
What they wanted
Firebase Analytics integrated into that existing pipeline, without disrupting how APKs were already being generated and packaged.
Where they started
A legacy Android APK-generation pipeline: a PHP backend and Solr-based workers driving APK templating and packaging (using apktool and Smali-level tooling), alongside older Windows/VB-based tooling — not a standard single-app Gradle build.

My role & contributions

What I found
Investigated the legacy Worker/build pipeline end-to-end to understand how a generated APK's package and configuration could be matched correctly to a Firebase Analytics identity, and how the integration could fail safely without breaking APK generation itself.

Challenges & solutions

  1. Challenges

    Integrating a modern analytics SDK into an unfamiliar, non-standard build pipeline — not a normal single-app Gradle project — where a mistake could break APK generation for every output, not just analytics.

    Key decisions

    Integrated the Firebase Analytics SDK and Google Services configuration, matched per generated package; implemented fail-open behavior so an analytics setup failure never blocks APK generation; handled user-IP data appropriately; and validated custom event delivery (launch_app, app_screen_view, pre_grant, download, lost_conn) and the generated APK/packaging output.

    Outcome

    Delivered and completed as a paid engagement.
